A fearless gambler who trusts luck more than life gets caught in a series of crazy and unexpected events that turn his world upside down.
A Terrific First Half Let Down by a Disappointing Second Half
I'm Game is one of those films that creates genuine excitement in its first half, only to lose almost all of that momentum after the interval. The film attempts something quite different within the science-fiction space, and the ambition is certainly appreciable. At the centre of it all is Dulquer Salmaan, who delivers a terrific performance in a unique sci-fi role and becomes the biggest reason to stay invested in the film.
The first half is the film's biggest strength. The world-building, mystery and introduction of the central concept are handled with enough curiosity to keep the audience engaged. There is a constant feeling that something interesting is waiting to unfold, and the film successfully uses that uncertainty to build intrigue. The futuristic elements and the unusual nature of Dulquer's character give the film a distinct identity, while the presentation manages to create some genuinely exciting moments.
Dulquer Salmaan is excellent in a role that demands something different from him. His character has a unique nature, and the actor adapts himself convincingly to the physicality, expressions and behavioural patterns required for the part. Rather than playing it like a conventional hero, Dulquer gives the character its own personality and rhythm. Even when the writing becomes weaker, his performance continues to hold the screen together. This is easily one of the most unusual roles in his career, and he commits to it completely.
The technical side also deserves appreciation. The film has the scale and ambition of a proper science-fiction entertainer, and several portions demonstrate what the makers were attempting to achieve. The visual treatment, production design and futuristic setting help establish an interesting world. There is a clear effort to create something beyond the usual template, and that ambition is one of the film's positives.
