I'm Game

What begins as an intriguing sci-fi thriller gradually becomes messy and frustrating. The screenplay loses the sharpness it had established before the interval, and the film starts throwing too many ideas at the audience without giving them the required emotional or narrative weight. The curiosity created in the first half isn't converted into a satisfying payoff.

The pacing also suffers considerably. Scenes that should have generated tension or excitement instead feel prolonged, while some developments come across as convenient rather than organic. The film seems to struggle with how to bring its ambitious concepts together, and the result is a second half that feels significantly weaker than what came before it.

This is especially disappointing because the first half sets up the film for something much bigger. The interval leaves you expecting an equally strong continuation, but the narrative gradually loses control. The more the story progresses, the more apparent its writing issues become.

The emotional portions also don't land with the same impact. For a film built around such an unusual central character and concept, stronger emotional grounding could have made the second half much more effective. Instead, the movie increasingly focuses on moving the plot forward, sacrificing some of the character development and emotional connection that could have elevated it.

That said, I'm Game deserves credit for trying something different. It is not another routine commercial film, and the ambition behind its science-fiction world is visible throughout. Dulquer's performance is a major plus, and there are enough interesting ideas in the film to show that the makers were aiming beyond conventional storytelling.

But ambition alone cannot compensate for weak execution. The difference between the two halves is striking: a terrific and engaging first half followed by a disappointing and poorly controlled second half.

The film ultimately becomes a case of great potential that isn't fully realised. If the second half had maintained the mystery, tension and freshness of the first, I'm Game could have been a much more satisfying science-fiction experience.

Verdict

I'm Game starts with a bang but struggles badly to stick the landing. The first half is terrific, the concept is interesting, the technical ambition is commendable, and Dulquer Salmaan does a great job in a genuinely unique sci-fi role. Unfortunately, the weak writing, uneven pacing and disappointing second half pull the overall experience down significantly.

A film that shows flashes of brilliance but ultimately fails to convert its promising beginning into a satisfying whole.
